frequently Asked Questions
FAQs About SPRAVATO® Treatment
01 How is SPRAVATO® different from regular antidepressants?
SPRAVATO® acts on the NMDA receptors in the brain, targeting depression in a faster and different way than SSRIs or SNRIs.
02 Is SPRAVATO® safe?
Yes. SPRAVATO® is FDA-approved and administered only in certified clinics under medical supervision to ensure your safety and comfort.
03What are the possible side effects?
The most common side effects of SPRAVATO® when taken alongside an anti-depressant include:
- Feeling detached from yourself, your emotions, thoughts, and the environment around you
- Increased blood pressure
- Sleepiness (sedation)
- Slowed breathing
Side effects from SPRAVATO® typically occur shortly after taking the medication and wear off during treatment and throughout the day. Your healthcare provider will discuss side effects in more detail during your evaluation.
04 How soon will I feel better?
05 What is the treatment schedule like?
SPRAVATO® is typically administered twice weekly for four weeks, then once weekly for the next four weeks. After that, treatment is typically weekly or biweekly during the maintenance phase depending on the result.
06 Can I drive after treatment?
No. You’ll need someone to drive you home after each session, as side effects like drowsiness or dissociation are possible.
07Is it covered by insurance?
SPRAVATO® is covered by most insurance plans. Active Path Mental Health is in-network with most major commercial insurance plans.
08How is esketamine (SPRAVATO®) different from ketamine?
SPRAVATO® is derived from ketamine but they are not the same thing. Ketamine is composed of two molecules (also known as enantiomers) called esketamine and arketamine. Esketamine is considered the “more active” enantiomer that has a higher affinity for the target receptors in the brain that lead to an antidepressant effect.
09What conditions can SPRAVATO® treat?
- MDD
- MDSI- (Major Depression with Suicidal Ideation)
