Take our online depression self-assessment

In a world where mental health is becoming more of a topic of conversation, it can be difficult to determine if seeing a therapist yourself could be beneficial. Many believe that therapy should be reserved for those who are experiencing serious distress. The reality is that almost anyone, regardless of their mental state or level of distress can benefit from therapy.

Our fast-paced society can create unrealistic expectations for juggling work and home demands, increasing our stress levels. High levels of stress can create a negative impact on physical and mental health. Finding ways to lower this stress can be a great benefit from therapy.

Here are a few signs it might be time to speak with a therapist:

  1. Feeling sad and unmotivated. If you have felt hopeless, sadness, irritability, overwhelm, have decreased energy, or have thoughts of suicide, you may be dealing with depression and could benefit from talking with a therapist.
  2. Excessive worry. If you feel like your anxiety is interfering with your ability to do normal activities and/or sleeping, seeking help may be a good option.
  3. Trauma or abuse. If you have experienced trauma or abuse in your life, a therapist may be able to help you work through these emotions and develop coping skills to continue processing and find enjoyment in your life.
  4. Relationship issues. A therapist can help you navigate relationship issues and find your voice to help in creating a more fulfilling relationship.
  5. Difficult life transitions. Whether it’s the loss of a job, a move to a new city, a divorce, or the loss of a loved one, a therapist can help you process these emotions and work through lingering grief.
  6. Social withdrawal. If you feel fear or anxiety being around others, you may find yourself distancing yourself from other people. Therapy can help you understand and deal with these feelings.
  7. Fatigue. Wanting to sleep more than usual or having trouble getting out of bed in the morning? These symptoms are often linked to mental health issues and a therapist can help your process.
  8. Apathy. Losing interest in activities you used to enjoy can be a sign of depression or anxiety and time that seeking therapy could be beneficial.

Therapists can help in the issues above as well as many others. Obtaining help from a professional can increase insight and self-awareness, leading to a happier and healthier life.
