Take our online depression self-assessment

When you’re trying to make a decision, reviews from others can play a large role in the outcome. From everyday decisions, like choosing a restaurant, to life-changing choices, like accepting a job offer, the experiences from other people can help sway you one way or the other.

When it comes to mental health care treatments, researching data from medical professionals as well as reviews from past patients can help you figure out if the option is right for you. If you have depression, anxious depression or OCD, then you may be considering TMS. We’re here to shed a spotlight on the many positive reviews of TMS therapy to boost your confidence in the treatment.

Read on to learn about the basics of TMS before exploring reviews of TMS therapy from patients as well as support from medical professionals.

What is TMS therapy?

Transcranial magnetic stimulation, or TMS therapy, is a neurostimulation therapy that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate the areas of your brain that contribute to your moods and emotions. It’s a non-medication and noninvasive option for treatment-resistant depression and OCD, which means that a person hasn’t shown improvement after at least two cycles of antidepressants.

TMS therapy involves 36 treatments that are administered five days a week over the course of six weeks, followed by a taper of six sessions. This FDA-cleared treatment doesn’t require anesthesia, so you’re able to drive yourself to and from your sessions that are held at an outpatient mental health clinic. There are also minimal side effects that fade relatively quickly, such as mild headaches, or right after the treatment, in the case of discomfort around the treatment area, and twitching facial, jaw, and scalp muscles.

TMS therapy reviews from patients

If you’re a prospective patient, it can be comforting to hear about the experiences of TMS therapy from past patients.

When it comes to TMS therapy, our patients have expressed their appreciation for how TMS has helped them along their mental health journey. Here are just a few reviews left about TMS therapy at Active Path Mental Health:

  • “TMS gave me back the ability to be a happy, growing, peaceful woman, learning how to make good decisions for the first time in my life.” – Amy, Google Review
  • “It was transforming. I feel like my battery has been recharged.” – Anonymous
  • “I would say you’ve got nothing to lose. And everything to gain. And I think you’ll be surprised at what it can do for you.” – Todd

Our patients also praise our caring and knowledgeable staff on Google reviews. For example, Amber called our staff “very thorough and informative,” while Chelsea said we have a “caring, gentle environment.”

The data from past patients can showcase the efficacy of TMS therapy. Most people notice improvement by the end of the fourth week, but 79% of patients experience a greater than 25% decrease in depression symptoms when all 36 treatments have been completed. Many have their symptoms cut in half, with 56% of patients having a 50% reduction of symptoms. Some even have their depression symptoms completely eliminated, with 33% of patients reaching remission.

TMS therapy approval in the medical community

It’s comforting to hear reviews from fellow TMS patients, and it’s also important to know that medical professionals support treatment options like TMS therapy. Research of TMS therapy in the medical community can help prove the safety and efficacy of the treatment due to the data that can back it up.

There has been extensive research done on TMS by medical professionals since the 1980s. A consensus was completed of more than 100 studies that support the efficacy and safety of repetitive TMS antidepressant therapy. The positive outcomes from dozens of research studies completed over the years led to TMS therapy being cleared as a depression treatment in 2008 by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and again as an OCD treatment in 2018.

It’s important to note that every patient is different. If your mental health provider doesn’t think that TMS therapy is right for you, that doesn’t discount the efficacy of the therapy. It just means that your symptoms don’t fit the treatment option.
